Notes from Rev. Jill by Reverend Jill Carlson Flyr
Inquirers Program: An Introduction to Grace United Methodist Church
Starting February 21, 2010 a three session class for those interested in learning more about
United Methodism and Grace United Methodist Church will be made available at 9 a.m. During
the first session we will contemplate about what it means to be a United Methodist congregation, a
church in mission, a church at worship, and a learning church. The uniqueness of United Metho-
dism, our Social Principles, and connectedness will be the focus of our gathering on February 28.
The third session on March 7 will focus on the responsibilities of membership and the opportuni-
ties for service at Grace United Methodist Church. If you or anyone you know desires to expand
your knowledge of United Methodism or Grace United Methodist Church by attending these
classes please contact Rev. Jill Flyr at jillflyr@gracedesmoines.org or (255-2131, ext. 238).
Confirmation Class
The Confirmation Class is preparing a Methodist heritage display for Grace @ 125 Celebra-
tion. The class has been divided into three groups. One group is researching Susanna Wesley, another John Wesley and a
third group, Charles Wesley. Tammie Andrews and Deb Miller as parent volunteers have worked with one of the groups.
Thank you! We are still planning to visit the Islamic worship service at the Islamic Center on March 19 during Spring Break.
January activities included bowling, a lively game of tag, and board games such as Bananagrams and Apples
to Apples. Ice Skating at Brenton Park was scheduled for February 14. February 21 is Fun with Food, always
a favorite, and on February 28 a game of Mafia is planned. As the youth are rehearsing The Hobbit, the activi-
ties at the end of February will be more low key.
Sermon Study on Bread of Angels by Barbara Brown Taylor
Selected sermons from Barbara Brown Taylor’s book Bread of Angels will be the spring board for discussion in a sermon study to be
held starting March 2. These classes led by Rev. Jill Flyr and Leigh Fleming will celebrate the keen insights of this incredible
preacher. Barbara Brown Taylor is able to take a biblical text and speak its truths in ways that address the issues of our day to day
living. In this book she reveals how divine love often makes itself known in reversals and surprises.
The class will be taught on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. at Wesley Acres and from 7 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. in room
307 in the educational unit. Participants will be able to join either class depending upon their schedule.
Books will be available at $15.00 each in the church office one week before the class begins.
